USHA Condemns Terror Attacks on Mumbai, Asks US to Add Indian Mujahideen to the List of Foreign Terrorist Organizations
July 13, 2011 – Atlanta - The US Hindu Alliance strongly condemns the terrorist attacks on Mumbai today. The continued attacks on innocent civilians in India demonstrate the chronic failures of the Government of India in tackling the menace. We urge the United States to add the Indian Mujahideen to the list of foreign terrorist organizations.
More than 20 people are reported to have been killed and over 100 injured in the city of Mumbai after three explosions rocked crowded areas of the city during rush hour. The Ministry of Home Affairs, responsible for India’s internal security, has stated that they suspect the perpetrators are most likely the Indian Mujahideen (IM), a terror group with close ties to Pakistan’s Lashkar - E – Tayiba (LeT), the terror group responsible for the 2008 Mumbai attacks which killed 176 people and injured more than 300. The attacks today mark the 24th birthday of the lone surviving Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, who was caught by Indian forces and convicted of the crimes.
The recurring terror attacks clearly point to the gross failures of the Indian Government in tackling terror. A complete overhaul of policies, procedures, intelligence gathering and coordination among security agencies will be required to prevent terrorists from succeeding in the future. The United States and Israel have succeeded in preventing terror attacks due to a firm resolve to fight terror boldly and implement all measures required to safeguard human life and property. Greater cooperation with the United States and Israel will yield better results in preventing future attacks.
Given the large number of attacks in the past few years, we urge the US Secretary of State to immediately designate the
Indian Mujahideen as a foreign terrorist organization and monitor its activities in cooperation with India. We welcome President Obama’s support for India to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice.
